Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How long does it take to cook a meal?
With solar cooking, your cooking power is dependent on the intensity of the sun. Cooking generally takes longer than what a recipe calls for. The good news is your energy is free and food will usually not burn if you leave it longer than intended. On an average day of the year in Port Elizabeth you should be getting a pot of around 800g of cooked food.
  • Is the energy really free?
Yes, entirely free. There is no electricity, gas, paraffin, firewood or any other source of energy, but the sun.
  • What can I do in a solar cooker?
You can bake, roast, boil, jam, and steam with this cooker and the right kitchen equipment. You can also pasteurise water for drinking, and dehydrate food to preserve it for months without refrigeration.
  • What do I need to start solar cooking?
You will need a black pot, a clear plastic bag or glass enclosure, and a trivet to lift the pot up around 5-10 cm. Once you find just one combination that works, you can keep using it for a lifetime.
  • How do I solar cook?
Place all your food, spices, bay leaves etc. inside your pot with little to no water. Cover with the lid and put the pot in a glass or plastic enclosure. Place this on a trivet in your cooker. Aim the cooker towards the sun using the Sunsight. Adjust throughout the day if necessary.
  • Can I cook in today’s weather?
A good rule of thumb is: as long as the sun casts a shadow off your body, you can cook food in your solar cooker. With high-intensity sun, you’ll be able to cook in the wind, rain and even low winter temperatures.
  • How many cookers should I buy?
Buy one solar cooker for every plate on the stove top that you would usually occupy. Another good indicator is to buy one solar cooker for every member of your household, and one more to share food with a stranger in need.
  • How easy is solar cooking?
Much like riding a bicycle, it takes a little practice before you can consistently get it right. Take some time to learn before showing others your new skills.
